New and Innovative Masonry Product Used to Consolidate Four Albany College Campuses

ALBANY – After 10 months of construction and $5.6 million, the approximately 90,000 square foot, 3-story University Heights building, combining four Albany college campuses, was recently completed. Roughly 45,000 square feet of a new masonry product produced by Redland Brick-KF was supplied by Creative Materials Corporation for the buildings. The material, Concord Blend Modular cored, meets the ASTM standard C-216, type FBS, Grade SW.

The University Heights Association (UHA) initiated the project and was established to merge common services among the Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany Medical Center, Albany Law School, and the Sage Colleges, which are essentially on the same campus. The project was designed by Sear-Brown, which developed a dormitory style edifice to coordinate with surrounding buildings.

With approximately 300,000 pieces used, this was the first major commercial project in the capital region to utilize this material. Redland Brick specifically produced this product in an attempt to match the color range of older buildings, which was what the architect was looking for. This appearance is achieved in the production process by flashing the material to create darker, more variegated coloring. This higher quality brick brings more innovation to the buildings than a solid color and is produced in a modular size. Also used as an accent brick was a Watsontown Brick Carlton Type 8 modular in a soldier course, which added to the success of this project.
